How do you pray when travelling?

Performing the 5 daily prayers is obligatory for every Muslim, however merciful Allah allowed shortening the prayers as a concession for travellers known as (Qasr).

Qasr is mentioned in the Quran and the Noble Sunnah.

And because the holy Quran is the primary source of legislation and covers all aspects of Muslim life, Qasr is mentioned in the Quran Surah Al-Nisaa verse 101.

It is allowed to shorten the prayers that consist of 4 rakaat (Al-Dhuhr, Al-Asr and Al-Ishaa) to be 2 rakaat only.

On the other hand, Al-Fajr and Al-Maghrib prayers are performed in full.

It is worth mentioning that 2 Sunnah rakaat of Al-Fajr prayer and 3 rakaat Witr with Al-Ishaa prayer are performed without fail, according to what Prophet Mohamed peace be upon him did.

There are some conditions under which we can shorten prayers such as:

  •  Distance
  • The period of the journey

And according to different Fiqh, conditions it differs as follows;

  • Imam Abu Hanifa: the distance must be 80 km or more and the period is less than fifteen days.
  • Imam Shafi, Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal, Imam Malek: the distance must be 88 km or more and the period is less than 4 days excluding the days of departure and arrival.

The shortening concession is available when the person leaves the city limits and stops when he returns back to it.

Don’t forget to determine the direction of the Qibla correctly and to recite the Quran in Arabic during prayers to achieve the benefits of reading Quran in Arabic and gain Allah’s blessings.

In the hadith reported by sayiduna Jubayr Ibn Mut’im, Prophet Mohamed peace be upon him told him to recite 5 Surahs with 6 Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Rahim during travelling which are: Surah Al-Kafirun, Al-Nasr, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, Al-Nas, with one Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Rahim at the end.

He said that he did so until he became the best in appearance among his companions.

But it is worth mentioning that the chain for this hadith is weak but can be practised to gain the advantages of reading the Quran and feeling close to Allah Almighty.

It is advisable also to recite Ayat Al-Kursi and the last 2 Ayat of Surah Al-Baqara, you can read as much as you need from the holy Quran until you feel calm and contained.
