Muslims believe that only Allah can suffice and protect them against evil and uncertainties and Allah Almighty loves to be asked by them as mentioned in the holy Quran:
- Surah Al Baqarah verse 186:
- Surah Ghafir verse 60:
For that reason, the connection of Muslims with Allah Almighty must be continuous in all life aspects.
Dua is how Muslims speak and communicate with Allah Almighty directly and ask Him for their needs, guidance, protection, calm their fears, and forgiveness.
Prophet Mohamed peace be upon him emphasizes the importance of dua in every life situation especially while travelling and we will learn the dua for travelling on a plane later.
How do you wish someone a safe flight in Islam?
Islam is the religion of peace and mercy and Muslims should wish the best for each other in all situations.

How do you pray when travelling?
Performing the 5 daily prayers is obligatory for every Muslim, however merciful Allah allowed shortening the prayers as a concession for travellers known as (Qasr).
Qasr is mentioned in the Quran and the Noble Sunnah.
And because the holy Quran is the primary source of legislation and covers all aspects of Muslim life, Qasr is mentioned in the Quran Surah Al-Nisaa verse 101.
It is allowed to shorten the prayers that consist of 4 rakaat (Al-Dhuhr, Al-Asr and Al-Ishaa) to be 2 rakaat only.
On the other hand, Al-Fajr and Al-Maghrib prayers are performed in full.
It is worth mentioning that 2 Sunnah rakaat of Al-Fajr prayer and 3 rakaat Witr with Al-Ishaa prayer are performed without fail, according to what Prophet Mohamed peace be upon him did.
There are some conditions under which we can shorten prayers such as:
- Distance
- The period of the journey
And according to different Fiqh, conditions it differs as follows;
- Imam Abu Hanifa: the distance must be 80 km or more and the period is less than fifteen days.
- Imam Shafi, Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal, Imam Malek: the distance must be 88 km or more and the period is less than 4 days excluding the days of departure and arrival.
The shortening concession is available when the person leaves the city limits and stops when he returns back to it.
Don’t forget to determine the direction of the Qibla correctly and to recite the Quran in Arabic during prayers to achieve the benefits of reading Quran in Arabic and gain Allah’s blessings.

5 Travelling Dua
When embarking on a journey, especially one that takes you far from home, it’s natural to seek protection, guidance, and peace of mind. In Islam, there are specific duas (supplications) that are recommended to recite before and during travel. These duas not only provide spiritual comfort but also strengthen your connection with Allah, ensuring a safe and blessed journey. Here are five essential duas for travelling:
1. Dua Before Starting the Journey
Before you set out on your trip, recite this dua to ask for Allah’s protection and blessings:
Subhanalladhi sakh-khara lana hatha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin wa inna ila rabbina lamunqaliboon.
“Glory to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it by our efforts. And to our Lord surely must we turn back.”
This dua reminds us of Allah’s control over all things and asks for His help in managing our journey.
2. Dua When Leaving Home
As you step out of your home, it’s essential to seek Allah’s protection from harm and evil:
Bismillahi tawakkaltu ‘alallahi wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.
“In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no power nor might except with Allah.”
This supplication ensures that you are under Allah’s care as you venture out.
3. Dua for Safety During Travel
While on your journey, recite this dua to seek safety and ease:
Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’tha’is safari, wa ka’abatil manzari, wa soo’il munqalabi fil maali wal ahl.
“O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a bad outcome, and from coming back to my property and family with a bad situation.”
This dua is a comprehensive request for protection from all possible hardships during travel.
4. Dua When Boarding a Vehicle (Car, Plane, etc.)
Before boarding any form of transportation, recite this dua to ask for a safe journey:
Bismillahi majreha wa mursaaha inna rabbi laghafoorur raheem.
“In the name of Allah be its moving and its stopping. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.”
This supplication acknowledges Allah’s control over the vehicle and asks for His mercy during the journey.
5. Dua Upon Returning Home
Once you’ve completed your journey and are returning home, it’s recommended to recite:
Ayiboona, taiboona, ‘abidoona, li rabbina hamidoon.
“We return, repent, worship, and praise our Lord.”
This dua expresses gratitude for a safe return and acknowledges Allah’s blessings throughout the journey.

What is the traveller’s prayer in Islam?
Muslims seek Allah’s blessings and ask him for protection before any action such as working, starting a new life project, travelling, and much more.
Besides reciting dua for travelling on a plane and according to the Noble Sunnah, Muslims must perform two rakat prayers before leaving home and after arrival reciting in the first one Surah Al-Kafirun after Al-Fatiha, and Surah Al-Ikhlas after Al-Fatiha in the second one according to what is mentioned in Al-Majmu for Imam Al-Nawawi.
Through this prayer, Allah saves Muslims from harm, protects them from uncertainties and facilitates difficulties they may face outside or inside the home.
It also enhances the continuous attachment to Allah in any life situation bringing Allah’s blessings and protection.
Which surah to read when travelling?
In the hadith reported by sayiduna Jubayr Ibn Mut’im, Prophet Mohamed peace be upon him told him to recite 5 Surahs with 6 Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Rahim during travelling which are: Surah Al-Kafirun, Al-Nasr, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, Al-Nas, with one Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Rahim at the end.
He said that he did so until he became the best in appearance among his companions.
But it is worth mentioning that the chain for this hadith is weak but can be practised to gain the advantages of reading the Quran and feeling close to Allah Almighty.
It is advisable also to recite Ayat Al-Kursi and the last 2 Ayat of Surah Al-Baqara, you can read as much as you need from the holy Quran until you feel calm and contained.
